GC135: Favorite Paper

Oops...the Monday holiday thru me. I forgot to get this posted this morning!

We're using up our scraps over at Gingersnap Creations this month. Today's challenge is to use your FAVORITE PAPER.

Well my "favorite" (can a paper hoarder have a favorite??) paper has long been Basic Grey. So I sorted thru my BG scraps and used my heart Nesties. Little Quasi here was stamped and colored with Copics. Fun and fast! AND USED SCRAPS!

Rogue Redhead: Milliner Misses

Over on the Rogue Redhead blog, our current Rebel Challenge is to use one piece of designer paper. So, I decided to dig out some Christmas paper and came across a 6x6 pad of Basic Grey's Wassail paper. I love the delicate holly leaves.

The one of the newest Rogue Redhead release is Milliner Misses. I just love these sweet-faced ladies.

I used Copics to color her because she needed to stand-out against the paper. It's been a while since I colored with Copics and I've forgotten the vibrant colors! I used BG10 to outline her and then sponged some Distress Ink Forrest Moss around the edges.

I dressed up this Miss' hat with a sprig of holly and a few rhinestone; added a little glitter on her collar; and the gold hairy cord - and this Miss is already for Christmas shopping (just in time for Black Friday)!!

Julian Michael Cinefro

I think I told you about the new man in my life...my grand nephew, Julian.

Julian was born on Oct 22nd. That was the weekend I was headed back to New Jersey to teach at One Little Spark in Tuckerton. In fact, Julian's daddy called me as I was headed to the airport.

I finally got to meet the newest member of the family last weekend. My niece and her hubby invited the entire Corder Clan (we're not that big...only 4 additional people) to their new house in Nashville.

I loved this Webster's Pages paper but it was such a large image (the bottom quarter of a 12x12), that I didn't want to cover it with a lot. So I tried my hand at the rosette. I don't have Tim's fancy die and can't see spending all that money for one when you can make one simply enough. Figure out how big you want the end circle (3 inches for me). Cut a strip of paper 1/2 that width (1.5 incehs). And score every 1/2 inch. Then flip over the paper, offset by a 1/4 inch and score every 1/2 inch. This creates valleys and mountains to help you fold the paper. Fold in sections. I used Glossy Accents and that new glass glitter on the edge of the medallion.

The "Welcome Baby" was from a PaperTrey Ink set. And I sponged color while the Nestie was still in place.

Here's Julian in his reindeer suit blowing bubbles a few days after Christmas. He's such a cute cuddly guy. But he is a big baby! With a mother that's 5'11" and a father that's 6'4" - well is it any wonder that he's 97 percentile at 2 months? (BIG GRIN)

Did you know that I knit? I only knit socks. This was my first try at baby socks (and cabling). Purple is Daddy's favorite color. I'm glad they fit!

Deb's Recipe of the Month - July

Time again for the Recipe of the Month! This month (being half way thru the year) is BONUS month. In other words, I did two recipes.

My mom and I have dueling recipes for this slaw with Ramen Noodles. She uses red cabbage and chops it up like sand. And fries the noodles. ME? I like them soft and the cabbage shred (I don't care what color). Since I'm the one doing the recipe do-overs, I did MY version!

I always love using the Hero Arts FOUR DOLLS set. This one was colored with Copics to "match" the Basic Grey paper. I didn't really have the right markers but it worked. And I wasn't that crazy about the BG June Bug paper series, but I loved this soft purple/blue one. And it's very oriental looking. It's a pretty basic recipe card.

This recipe I saw this recipe posted on Michelle Wooderson's blog MISH MASH last year. I *LOVE* Fresca, it brings back many memories of my grandmother and hot summer afternoons. So EASY SQUEEZY CRANBERRY LIME COOLERS sounded great!

The glass was colored with Copics and then highlighted with glitter. I was worried that the Glossy Accents would make the Copic run or fade - but it didn't! You can see the glitter under the Glossy Accents. It's a cool look.

Deb's Recipe of the Month - June

This is a breakfast favorite of my families. It's one of those breakfast casseroles that you can make the night before and just throw in the oven the next morning!!

I am *NOT* a morning person. So I can totally relate to "BUNNY". She's colored with Copics. But she's such a long stamp that I had to turn the recipe card up on it's side.

Tag Tuesday #55 -- These Are A Few of My Favorite Things

Louise's (Kard Krazy) challenge this week was to make a tag with a few of my favorite things. That one had me stumped for awhile. But hey - it's a TAG! That's #1 on my list. And Distress Inks - love what you can do with them!

I was playing around with tag backgrounds the other day - I called this a successful failure. Successful because I do like the end result, but a failure from the stand point that I didn't quite achieve what I was trying for. I wanted to mask the sentiment background.

But I didn't take into consideration the sentiment before I did the masking work. The area under the mask was sponged with Distress Ink Spun Sugar, then I laid the mask down and sponged Worn Lipstick. With the mask still on, I sprayed Glimmer Mist and sponged a bit with Broken China.

The butterfly was cut with a Nestablities butterfly die. I sprayed glue before removing the die and hit it with glitter. HINT: Soak the Nesties in rubbing alcohol to remove glitter/glue. (oops...)

Deb's Recipe of the Month Club - May

Just squeaking under the wire with the May issue of DEB'S RECIPE OF THE MONTH!! This is an old family favorite recipe. Something my mom made for my sister and I as a special treat - "RED HOT JELLO". We'd all fight over the last bite.

Why the "Valentine's Day" treatment? Simple - my mom always made/makes this recipe in a heart-shaped mold. I used a lot of Nesties and punches on this - the only thing that is stamped is the label. I love the concept of the Just Rite stamps - the ability to create custom word borders or tags. But I struggle every time to get a clean stamp. There's always a edge or incomplete stamp on the letters. And the miniature letter blocks are an exercise in patience and steady hands! But this small 1 5/8" size works well. maybe there's not as much surface area.

Valentine Card - Love Sweater Tilda

Another card kit I sent in for a swap. This is an old Magnolia stamp called LOVE TILDA. I love this year's Valentine paper colors - pink, rose, and teal.

I used both paper and my heart Nesties for the heart. This time I have managed to use the MOJO MONDAY sketch (MOJO123). However, instead of a square or circle - I used a heart shape.

Recipe Box

With the wedding just after Christmas there wasn't a lot of emphasis placed ON Christmas. In fact, the gifts were small but perfect. If we spent this little every Christmas I think everybody would be just as happy and our pocket books would love us. This year with economy in mind, I decided to do handmade gifts for the ladies in my life. And to draw the Christmas cheer out by doing DEB'S RECIPE OF THE MONTH CLUB. Each month around the 15th, I will redo a family favorite (old or new) and send it to each member. But to house all these special recipes, I decided to do a recipe box and dividers as the wrapped gift.

These altered tins are about 5x7x4. I cut two strips of patterned paper from a 12x12. It overlaps a bit on the sides but nobody is looking at the sides! (wink). I also cut two lacy border swith my Nestablities die. The red super tape is a must for this...other wise the edges of the paper will pop-up.

The main image panel was also cut from Nesties. The white was then airbrushed with my Copic marker/airbrush system. Then stamped with a script stamp. Chef Tilda and the knife/fork were colored with Copics. I put a ribbon band around the lid of the tin.

Inside the tin I included recipe dividers that I failed to take a picture of. But they were in the same colors as the papers on the outside of the tin. And were decorated with strips and blocks of left over paper.

My sister teaches high school math/science at Aviano High School, Aviano Air Force Base, Italy which is an hour north of Venice, Italy. We visit from time to time and in 2001, we went to Carnivale (the Italian version of Mardi Gras). Unlike it’s New Orleans counter part, this is more Masquerade Ball than Street Party. The denizens of Venice spend up to a year on costumes to be displayed in San Marco Square during the festivities. These elegant costumes are head to toe FABULOUS! I took over 20 pictures of costumes and narrowing it down to 4 to share was nearly impossible.

Vintage Snow Couple

Just a little wintery couple to start the Christmas card collection!

This is for a challenge on SCS to make a card with a window (and a Crafty Secrets image). I had received an order of Crafty Secret images the day before and fell in love with this cute snow couple. My window was cut with two Nestabilities. After running them through my Xyron twice to put adhesive on both sides - I glittered once side. I also cut an acetate window sheet with the larger Nestie and stuck that on the other sticky side. Pop-dots all the way around made it into a shaker window. The tiny glass beads add a bit of movement.

The paper...well that comes from one of those pads of paper that the LSS (local stamp/scrapbook store) had in the clearance bin for like a $1. Hard to beat a pad of 6x6 paper for a BUCK! The vintage papers worked really well with the image!

And finally, I had to use my new Martha Stewart holly punch. I punched three boughs, creased each leaf in half and then brushed with my ever handy brown mini ink pad (Chestnut Roan - what would I do with out it???) Holly berries are Stickles!

Yummy for your Tummy: Oops Tilda

As I said in my previous post, my friend, Kelly, asked me to fill in on her blog's design team when a DT member couldn't fulfill her term. So, Friday's will be KLSNS cards! Check the DT blog out everyday. There's a new card each day of the week from a different designer!

This little Tilda is from the new Magnolia collection - YUMMY FOR YOUR TUMMY. She's colored with Copics to match Basic Grey's INDIAN SUMMER paper and isn't that yummy all by itself! I thought she needed some extra color in her cheeks after dropping the egg (how embarrassing!). Tilda was cut out and layered on a Swiss Dot oval. In fact, I used my Cuttlebug a lot on this card. The corner swirls, the Nestabilities ovals, and the Cuttlebug Swiss dot embossing folder. I some times think that my "Bug" is my best tool. I embossed first and then rubbed SU! Summer Sun lightly over the raised bumps to color. Then I cut the oval. Final touches include Glossy Accents on her shoes to make them look like patent leather Mary Janes.

I used 2 challenges for the card design. First the SCS Sketch Challenge (SC249) for the front of the card. And the Magnolia-licious sketch of the month - an EASEL CARD.


To keep the easel standing, I created a lacy edge border and folded it up. The edge of the card catches it. But it also folds flat for "easier" mailing. I always have a hard time mailing these card in anything short of a box. For one thing it's too lumpy, requiring extra postage. We won't discuss what the postage canceler does to the envelope.

Copic Pumpkins

It's been a Copic kind of day. First thing this morning I took "Copic Christmas" at Archiver's. Cute cards but if you're looking to learn Copic coloring techniques this is not the class for you. There are no techniques taught.

This afternoon, I've been working on some challenge cards.

This card combines two challenges: "COPIC CHALLENGE" and Beate John's "FRESH & FUN". Copic challenge is PUMPKINS. Fresh & Fun is the card sketch (WSC100) below. I cut 3 layers of Nesties. The bottom layer is stamped with glue and covered with an orange glitter. The pumpkins were stamped and then cut out. I made masks to cover the pumpkins and a strip of torn paper to air brush the "sky" and "ground". The largest pumpkin was colored on a second sheet and then pop-dotted. The edge of the orange flower was brushed with glue and then dipped in the glitter.

This was another challenge for the monthly Wish RAK group on SCS. Challenge #1 was yesterday's coffin (a Halloween card in a non-traditional size and/or shape). This is #2 - a card in PINK for Breast Cancer Awareness month. The image was a Wish RAK. The background is a Technique Junkie's method from the new CD#7 Bonus section: Compressed Sponge.

Happy October!!

Fall is definitely in the air in Colorado!! There's a nip in the air this morning. Driving home from work last night, through Ute Pass Canyon the color was amazing! We don't get the reds and oranges of the East but those aspen can bring on the GOLD!

These two cards are from the leftovers of a card kit I sent in for swap. The swap was for Magnolia images but Hanglar & Stanglar images are so close I don't think anybody will mind.

Hanglar & Stanglar is a Swedish company that doesn't sell outside of Sweden or Norway. Fortunately, I have a Norwegian connection. This image of the little girl with a chicken is one that I own, but I also have a SCS friend that keeps me supplied with H&S images. She just sent this one to me as well. Hen girl is colored with Copics and highlighted with several different glitter pens. I also used a white Souffle' pen to "polka dot" her dress. The paper was double-sided polka dots and both sides are visible here.

The second card used the ribbon in the kit and the other paper. I cut 3 ovals with my Nestabilities. The smallest oval was airbrushed in light blue/aqua. The rest of the details are the same.

Finally, I wanted to share the back of my H&S girl. I haven't taken a formal Copic certification class but I have the good fortune to have another friend who is a certified teacher. I've been following her tips for a while now and love how my Copic coloring is turning out. Her #1 tip to me was to be sure the ink was saturating the paper. You can see from the back that I'm getting it well saturated! (Thanks, Heather!) A well saturated paper allows the Copic inks to flow together and blend.

VSN - Tri-fold Shutter card & Kissing

Over the weekend SCS (Splitcoast Stampers) hosted it's monthly "VIRTUAL STAMP NIGHT" or VSN. Once a quarter, they have a full weekend of VSN challenges but the other months it's a mini - 5 challenges issued on a Friday night. The main VSN is November 13 & 14th and I've been selected as a hostess for that round! The theme for both mini's (Sept 25th and Oct 24th) and the main event in November is "MASQUERADE". September was all about "dancing".

The 1st challenge was Chaconne - Dancing in Triple Time". Chaconne was a 17th century dance, but the challenge was a technique called TRI-FOLD SHUTTER card folding. I thought it would take me a good hour to fold and and cut - much less decorate. In fact, it took like 3 minutes to fold and cut!

Here's the card opened up. It was so much easier to make than it looks that I'll have to try again!

All the stamps came from the SOUTH OF THE BORDER set. All colored with Copics and highlighted with Stickles (like the salt on the margarita glass).

I already posted Challenge #5 here (my crystal snowflake tutorial). This challenge was "A Kiss Good Night" or to use the Kiss technique. The snowboarder card was "kiss" technique. Using a solid stamp color with a light color ink - don't stamp yet. Then take a smaller stamp in a dark color ink and "kiss" the back of the solid stamp. Then stamp the solid stamp on paper.

Random Acts of Kindness

I'm in a group on SCS, where you can post "wishes" for images or products. Which keeps me from buying EVERY stamp I see. (grin) Somebody else in the group will fulfill my wish, if they have the stamp. I earn wishes by filling other member wishes - RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS (Wish RAK). Every month one of the group leaders posts 3 challenges. The only rule is that you must use one of your Wish RAK gifts. These are my entries for the month.

This challenge was to use 1/4 cup of rice in a plastic bag or balloon as a "stamp" to make a background. I tried to follow the directions (really I did) but it was just a big mess. So I improvised. I used embossing ink and clear EP with the rice stamp. After it was heated and set - I sprayed Glimmer Mist on the paper to make this INCREDIBLE background. The picture does *NOT* do it justice. The white dandelion on black was my wish RAK. To finish I put the round Denami HAPPY BIRTHDAY sentiment and a few rhinestones.

The hostess was inspired by the apple harvest in Michigan to create this color challenge: SU! Real Red, Barley Banana, and Certainly Celery (or Old Olive). I was inspired to use apples too! This EDWIN stamp was the Wish RAK (I think he looks like my nephew in his glasses). I colored Edwin with Copics. His sweater was colored and then using a wash cloth and blending solution I dabbed the sweater to give it texture. It really does look "fuzzy". I used this week's SCS Sketch Callenge #247. The apple core is punch art inspired by Julia Bettencourt. Red and cream cardstock is punched with SU! Rounded Tab punch. The cream is brushed with Creamy Caramel. The red is cut with decorative scissors. The seeds are Denami Raindrops. The sentiment is in a great set from Stampendous called LITTLE FRUIT. Die cut with my Nestabilities Labels and sponges with Summer Sun.

The final challenge was a sketch. I just got the new Basic Grey's EERIE paper and I had to use it! The dotted paper and strip were busy enough not to need additional enhancement. The mummy (Wish RAK) was colored with SU! markers. And then I used my SU! color spritzer to give him a confetti background.

Strawberry Tilda

I'm a guest designer for KL Stampin n Scrappin this week! Kelly's a long time stamping friend on SCS. The spot light this week is for Magnolia STRAWBERRY TILDA.


Tilda was stamped & colored on Neenah paper. Then die-cut with my long-rectangle Nestabilities. The background paper is a striped Basic Grey LEMONADE paper in a Technique Junkies technique called ZIG ZAG. I punch two holes at the top for the checkered ribbon and then added a label that I also die-cut with my Nestabilities labels and then sponged.


These are all the COPICs I used. As you can see it was quite a list. But I wanted to have good coloring on Tilda.

Eddie the Vampire

Here's today's SCS Sketch challenge.


As I posted earlier, I've been in quite a few card kit swaps in the last few months. This is the most recent - Magnolia Card Kits. This little vampire is *NOT* a Magnolia stamp. He's a Hanglar & Stanglar image. They're are almost impossible to get unless you have a friend/relative living in Sweden or Norway. Fortunately, I do!

I just love this little vampire with his garlic rope. I colored him with Copics. Out lining him with the very lightest blue/violet I have (BV000).

After I got him colored, I used one of my long, narrow Nestabilities rectangles to cut and emboss the edges.


All the Copics I used to color Eddie.



This is the inside of the card. I used some of the left over scraps to decorate the bottom edge of the card.

So! One card down for Halloween...many more to come!

Happy Birthday Adam!!

My nephew, Adam, turns 13 today! He's the baby of the family and the only male (currently, I'll have a nephew-in-law soon). This is the card I sent him.
